2.  COACHING THE AMBULANCE OPERATOR

OUTLINE:

This highly interactive program adopted from the International safety council’s CEVOIII combines defensive driving technics to the unique nature of ambulance work, training drivers to navigate safely through traffic in both emergency and nonemergency situations. They will learn:

1. Emergency Vehicle placement in traffic
2. Intersections, overtaking and changing lanes
3. Night time driving
4. Blind spots and cushion safety
5. Reversing and parking safely

3.     COURSE TITLE: DRIVERS’ AUTO MAINTENANCE

COURSE OUTLINE

At the end of the training delegates should be able to accurately diagnose and report vehicle faults and perform basic trouble shooting. The training is done in a workshop with practical demonstrations, it includes;

4.     COURSE TITLE: 4WD & OFF ROAD DRIVING

COURE OUTLINE

At the end of the training delegates shall:

• Acquire thorough knowledge of four wheel drive and off road driving to maneuver out of difficult road conditions
• Gain confidence to safely operate a manual transmission 4WD field vehicle on road.

The training includes Four wheel drive practical drills on a simulation circuit to reinforce the theory in the following 4×4 Off road driving situations;

• uphill and downhill 4WD maneuvers
  • driving on muddy/slippery surfaces
  • using 4WD to drive over obstacles and
  • 4WD wrench and recovery
  • Anti-skidding maneuvers

TARGET: staff who drive organization vehicles in the field with bad roads and difficult terrain.

5.     COURSE TITLE: ANTI CAR JACKING TRAINING

OUTLINE:

The raining aims at equipping delegates  with skills for safely managing carjacking and highway robbery situations. It includes confidence building driving skills especially for expatriates and their spouses and focuses on personal and vehicle security i.e Carjacking (urban) and Ambush (highway robbery). The topics covered include:

• Introduction to carjacking.
• Warning against carjacking.
• Reasons for jacking
• Common areas for carjacking.
• Avoidance
• Common attack plans
• Safety procedures during a carjacking; in a non-confrontational situation and in a resistive or confrontational response.
• After the attack.
• Describing the incident.

6.     COURSE TITLE: FORK LIFT SAFETY

OUTLINE

The training aims at reducing risk associated with fork lifts, delegates are shown how to handle various situations, check controls and wear proper equipment and choose safe behaviors. Although the operation of a forklift is similar to that of a car, there are important differences. Such differences include the speed, visibility, load stability, lack of stability on inclines or declines, path smoothness (potholes etc), load height, load rigging etc. The topics covered include:

• Safety inspections
• Operator responsibilities
• Checking controls
• Operator protections & precautions
• Checking loads; capacities, safety, pick-up, stability, moving loads, stacking and setting down
• Accidents prevention and common pitfall

Target: warehouse/cargo staff, fork lift operators, spotters and supervisors

7.     DRIVERS’ PREEMPLOYMENT TESTING

DESCRIPTION

SA Logistics can interview and test the applicants driving abilities in their respective classes with the objective of selecting drivers that are more likely to drive safely, fuel economically and care for the vehicles. Our test is a three pronged approach as follows;

1. License verification –You send us a list of applicants with their original licenses to enable us verify the authenticity and validity of the license and classes with FACE technologies to eliminate forgeries.
2. Theory test and interview (30% of total) –Applicants shall be interviewed to establish their road experience, knowledge of preventive maintenance and occupational road health and safety. Applicants will also be tested with a simple written test to establish knowledge of road signs, fuel economy and the Highway Code.
3. Practical Test (70%) –the in-vehicle test is done in a short route near the test centre that will include heavy and light traffic. It starts with an eye test by asking the applicant to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 meters and includes various aspects of safely driving that class of vehicle.

Other Special topic drills

1. Manual transmission reorientation –for drivers that are licensed to drive but have no experience driving manual transmissions. The training and practices help them gain confidence to safely operate a manual transmission 4WD field vehicle on road.
2. Expatriates’ Orientation: to gain confidence in order to safely drive in the Ugandan environment especially for expatriates and their spouses (5 hours)
3. Drivers customer service & etiquette includes; Customer care, Personal & vehicle hygiene, Public relations, management of personal finances (4 hours)

Understanding & Objectives

We understand that due to the high number of accidents and traffic offenses on  Uganda’s roads, Education Development Center Inc. (EDC) and it’s partners are seeking an external consultant to train their motorcycle riders in Defensive riding techniques. The objective of the training is to refresh and upgrade the motorcycle riders’ skills with the aim of increasing their safety on the road. At the end of the training, delegates should be able to:

• Ride motorcycles safely and responsibly by avoiding accidents despite the bad actions of other road users and bad road conditions
• Sustain mental harmony under stressful conditions and focus on riding
• Carry passengers and documents safely
• Comply with traffic laws, signs and markings (the highway code) and EDC’s motorcycle riding guidelines
• Ensure that the motorcycle is in a roadworthy condition and conduct preventive maintenance, diagnose and report motorcycle faults in a timely manner.
• Provide professional service to EDC with good customer care

2. Methodology & Training Program

The motorcycle riders training will be based on the “curriculum for training motorcycle and tricycle riders” that was developed in Tanzania by AFCAP/Transaid (sponsored by UKaid) in 2015. This new training edition is a result of invaluable feedback from the training sessions that we’ve run since 2001 and is based on more interactive coaching methods.

2.1 PROPOSED APPROACH & METHODOLOGY:

The training shall be done in modules consisting of theory and practices. For each module;

1. The trainer shall introduce the module/topic with statistics and facts to show its relevance and stimulate interest.
2. This will be followed by a presentation of the key elements, facts and required competencies. The recommended best practice and rationale will be stressed. For some modules, the presentations will include short bursts of practice and on-bike demos. The lectures will also include “talk-time” discussions about the topic, with the whole class sharing experiences, guided by the trainer.

• Thereafter trainees shall undertake formative assessment to determine on an on-going basis whether they are meeting the learning outcomes and where to advise on improvement. This will be done using a short oral quiz of 3-5 questions, a written test, or attendance and class participation regarding the module. If they have already acquired the outcomes of the module, they can proceed to the next stage.

1. Practical demonstration and instruction about motorcycles that was taught in the theory modules will be undertaken. This shall consist of a short burst of demonstrations during the theory classes followed by scheduled practices of different maneuvers and assignments. The practical includes vital pre-trip safety checks and inspections, followed by instructions and a ride on a set route.
2. As detailed in Section 2.2.7 below, the trainees will be coached with emphasis on the key points and issues raised in class. The instructors will accentuate motorcycle grip, control, stability and other issues raised in class. The practice ends with discussions and a debrief resulting from the ride, highlighting areas that one needs to work on.
